Rabin uses a chunk of pop culture per chapter as a platform from which to write his “heartwarming tale of triumph over adversity™” (a phrase the savvy Rabin has trademarked). Good, funny stuff, and, thanks to the pop culture chunks he employs, especially poignant for those in 25-35-year-old demographic.
His day job is Head Writer at the Onion’s AV Club. Read his ongoing “My Year of Flops” series, or, better yet, his “Nashville or Bust” columns, in which Rabin writes about his year-long exploration of country music, an genre with which he has heretofore been totally unfamiliar.
