This wonderful little modernist building immediately reminded me of the old “new” PLCH library on Vine Street, erected in 1958, and all but remodeled out of existence for the new (but now old) PLCH mega-library in the 1980s. The 1958 library was designed as a “department store of knowledge” with glass vitrines along Eight Street so that passerby could ogle the “goods” in display cases. Wandering around the area currently occupied by the Popular Library, you can still find the occasional column covered in sparkly aqua and white tiles.
