Once a year the heads of the nation’s surviving membership libraries convene to swap war stories and recipes for success.  The meetings are models of efficiency and congeniality from which the librarian-directors return refreshed and re-invigorated, ready to bring the absolute latest and best membership library practices to their home cities.  Hurricane Sandy forced the postponement of the 2013 convention in Providence to the weekend instant. It was a splendid convention in a splendid institution, the Providence Athenaeum.  The illustration above is just one example of the many useful hints we picked up, in this case a thoughtful menu for a board committee meeting.

  1. The Redwood Library in nearby Newport has a list of overdue novels borrowed by British officers during the Late Unpleasantness who sorely missed the convenience of a drive by Returns window when making thetr hasty departure.

  2. I’ll bet they were carping about the lack of a drive-thru in Alexandria.
