Weekend Reading: A Wanted Man

Fate smiled on us last Friday as the reserver of A Wanted Man, the new Jack Reacher thriller from Lee Child, turned out not to be available to pick the book up until Monday, giving us way more time than we needed to blitz through, blitzing being the only way to deal with the Reacher books which are basically state of the art literary roller coasters, although this most recent effort is less frightening than usual and not quite as satisfying in the throw-the-son-of-a-bitch-from-the-Greek-Revival-upstairs-porch sense that we have come to savor.  What there is a lot of – and it’s a remarkably effective device- is hours and hours of cruising the highways of Kansas and Missouri in the soon to be extinct gigantic American rear wheel drive sedans so esteemed by our police and g-men.  Most of the cruising is in the night, so it’s atmospheric as hell.
