Cart v. horse

Despite its rather impressive sounding collection, I’d never heard of the Harry Ransom Center until I read this piece in the latest Atlantic.  While it does sound like the Ransom Center has some great stuff, I’m not sure if I am okay with the “get the goods, then ensure the author’s eternal glory” model.  Maybe I should make peace with it, though.  After all, we’ve got shelves full of books by once esteemed authors who have since fallen out of favor.  Perhaps all we need is a little hype to make our dusty collection of Edison Marshall first editions into an Important Archive.
