I recently casually mentioned the George V. Higgins novel/Peter Yates film The Friends of Eddie Coyle. I had just read the novel, and thought it was fantastic. Well, I’m happy to report that, as you may know, the film is also great. It’s one of the more literal novel-to-film conversions I’ve seen. The novel is pretty short, and the film is pretty painless, so it’s worth lining them up one after the other.
As usual, you are encouraged NOT to take my word for it, so please watch A. O. Scott recommending the film in this video before you make any decisions.
