Weekend Reading: Dolen Perkins-Valdez

Family obligations (9 hours driving to and from greater Detroit where there are still vast oceans of money sloshing around no matter what you hear, following an elaborate dinner with an earl’s daughter) meant that there was less than the usual time available for the weekend read.  In truth, the only time at all was the last few hours of daylight Sunday while speeding south on the motorway with the leadfooted Mrs. Wolfe at the wheel, but that was enough time to get through 2/3 of Dolen Perkins-Valdez’s Wench, a well-done, mildly shocking novel about slave relationships set for much of its time in a resort somewhere close to Xenia, if we have unscrambled the author’s geographic clues correctly.  Ms P-V is expected to read next year at the Most Misspelled Library in America.  We might as well just go ahead and change the name to Merchantile, since nobody but we few even knows what our name means.  -Nemo Wolfe
