Homer & Langley- E. L. Doctorow

E. L. Doctorow’s new novel, Homer & Langley, is very loosely based on the lives of the Collyer brothers, the reclusive compulsive hoarders (as opposed to the rare outgoing, socially adept brand of compulsive hoarder) who somehow managed to accumulate around 100 tons of trash in their Harlem brownstone.

Langley Collyer was eventually crushed to death by bundles of his own stockpiled newspapers.  Writers are crazy for real world symbolism, so there have been many literary works based on their lives.  Nemo suspects My Brother’s Keeper by Marcia Davenport may actually be pretty good.

The Doctorow book has been getting mixed reviews, but Liesl Schillinger seemed to like it.
