Since we’re too cheap to be on the cable we’re Netflixing our way through Mad Men and liking it pretty well, although we don’t remember the 60’s as being quite so clean. Growing up we thought that being an ad man would be a pretty good way to go, but that was because we had read Max Shulman’s Rally Round The Flag Boys after having seen the Paul Newman movie. It’s a sunnier vision than the AMC production, where the humor is, for the most part, cruel. We can’t get to the collection, so we don’t know if the Shulman book is in our own stacks which are undergoing a painful facelift. Bit of frustration that. But we’re sure it’s at the junior library, and we will go out on a limb and recommend your taking it out and goofing off for a couple of hours. Then we suggest you hit up Netflix for the movie which is even funnier and has the young and very beautiful Joan Collins doing a Balinese dance step in a bedsheet. Oh, and the even younger Tuesday Weld is there to be seen.
