Some excellent writers are boring speakers*. Some rather unremarkable writers can hold an audience rapt for hours. And some rare and wonderful individuals can write stellar stuff all day long, then show up at your local membership library at night to effortlessly wow an audience with an hour’s worth of wit, charm, and insight. David Kamp falls into the “rare and wonderful” category. If you weren’t one of the lucky 100 folks who braved the cold to come meet David Kamp last night, you should make the following solemn vows today:
1. I will not pass up another opportunity to see David Kamp speak, and
2. I will listen to the librarian web loggers next time they tell me to come to an event.

*Or so I’ve been told. We’ve never had anyone like that at the Mercantile, of course.
