I (still) ♥ Zadie Smith

book cover of Martha and Hanwell by Zadie SmithSure, she’s married, and even I, her biggest fan, thought that On Beauty left not so much something to be desired as something to be desired to be left out, but whatever your stance on that recent short story contest unpleasantness (read: endearing unwillingness to compromise), you’ve got to admit she sure knows how to marry wit and erudition, viz. this New York Review of Books piece on the BBC talks of E.M. Forster titled “E.M. Forster, Middle Manager“.

The Merc has The Book of Other People, which she edited, and, if I have my way, will soon acquire Martha & Hanwell, despite its only having been released across the bloody pond.  For total-writing-dorks only:  The part of her The Believer interview with Ian McEwan that you can read without actually supporting the magazine. -Ed Scripsi
