Right now I'm in Seattle, which is very friendly to the two wheeled variety of transportation. Out here the two wheelers dare you to not treat them as four wheelers. They also insist on sneaking past cars lined up for lights. They do seem to want it all.
Sorry I can't be there for the convention.

Hmmm. I keep the Brits unto themselves and will do so until they enter the Eurozone. Had I blogged long enough I hope I would have made it clear that what I was talking about was the scene of the crime rather than the writer. Dan Fesperson, for example, is not a Slav, but he does a great Slavic crime. Europeans make quite a point of their lower crime rates, hammering it in quite enough that I look on Europe as a murder deprived continent.

Sounds a good book, but I have to disagree with you when you write "But I do know that fictional crime east of Germany time and again beats fictional Eurocrime". There is much superb Nordic, French and Italian crime fiction being written at the moment and in the past 40 years, as well as Irish, Scottish, English, Spanish et al. Want a list? Camilleri, Carofiglio, Vargas, Indridason, Martin Edwards, Ann Cleeves, Rankin, McGilloway, Theorin, Tursten, Fossum, Nesbo....you get the picture!

That book sounds great. I'll check it out. You might not know this, but the whole librarian thing is just for now. My real dream job is 1940s grifter. I'm just waiting for something to open up.

You should keep an eye or two peeled for an old copy of the Thesaurus of Slang. I think you'd get more out of it then anyone I know.

Oh, that looks like a nice book.

Ever read The Big Con? It was originally released in 1940, but there's a much more recent TPB edition. A linguist who studied con men wrote this very nice detailed study of the popular long and short con games run in the US in the early 20th century- lots of great slang and great names. I think The Sting used it it as a basis.

I'm kind of partial to "Iron Hat".

Halowe'en, eh? My Thesaurus of Slang describes that sort of behavior as "spoffish". I shouldn't talk, though. I'm kind of a fidfad myself.

This is a fabulous list, and I fully intend to integrate "Croon another, Crosby!" into all of my disbelieving interjections. Now, to become less gullible ...

I always like reading something old and seeing " 'phone" spelled with an apostrophe. Reminds me of a certain fellow I know who spells the October holiday Hallowe'en.

Yes, cheese-flation has definitely set in since this postcard was printed. On the other hand, there seems to have been a recession in coney length.
